Raspberries are a disappointing crop in Southern California, and the plants often fail to thrive. In order to set fruit, raspberries require a cold induced dormant period. Some gardeners in your region treat raspberries as annual plants, digging them up in the fall after harvest, and planting rooted canes the following spring for a late summer harvest.
