The Q&A Archives: Blue Spruce

Question: I have just won a living Christmas tree at our church and I was wondering how to keep it and when to transplant it.

Answer: If your tree has been inside for a long time, it may be difficult to keep it and plant it successfully. (Generally these do best if kept indoors for only a few days so they do not become acclimated to the warmer temperatures.) However, the best approach is to keep it cool and sheltered and watered and plant it in the ground as soon as possible. If your ground is frozen, keep it in a sheltered spot out of the wind and insulate the root ball with plenty of mulch to keep it from freezing. Good luck with your tree.
