I am looking for suggestions or some good reference books on how to arrange flower gardens. We have a 2 acre lot which has a new house under construction. So it receives full sun all day and there are no trees. I am looking for easily maintainable shrubbery and flowers that can be easily found at any garden center or grown from seed.

Here are several books you might find helpful. I particularly like the basic "Gardening for Dummies" by Michael McCaskey (ISBN 1-56884-644-4) which includes lots of basics plus some details about plant selection including trees, shrubs, vines and flowers and some actual designs. All the gardening books in the "Dummies" series are great as you begin to specialize a bit into say roses or annuals or lawns or what have you. Finally for perennial flowers one of my favorites is Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials by Ellen Phillips and C.Colston Burrell ISBN 0-87596-570-9. This one includes lots of plans for every situation and taste. Good luck with your new garden!
