I've been vegetable gardening (and buying your seeds) for over 20 years. I recently moved and this will be my first veggie garden at the new house. We have opossums, red squirrels, chipmunks and rabbits around here as well as garter snakes. Assuming that the garter snakes will repel the above mentioned animals, how do I attract them to and keep them in my vegetable garden area?

To be honest I'm not so sure the little garter snakes will repel those other critters for you -- it doesn't seem work at my house! Snakes seem to have their own set of preferences and are able to move into (or out of) any given area quite freely. While you might be able to attract them by working backwards from the steps often suggested to eliminate them I'm not sure you would really want to. Instead, you might want to consider a fence to exclude the four-legged rascals. Good luck with your new garden!
