I will be getting married in June. We recently bought a home with a large barren backyard. This is where we plan to wed. What can we plant to transform this barren space into one of many blossoms? What, when, do we need to start some plants early inside - we have set up a "growing room" in the basement with several commercial grow lights. Is there a book to use as a good guide?

I'm afraid it's going to be a challenge to get anything to flower by June. Some annual flowers you start indoors may flower by late June, but that's cutting it pretty close.

If I were you, I'd plan to purchase some "bedding plants" in the early spring, and plant them in your yard. You can purchase "6-packs" of impatiens and petunias, and 4" pots of geraniums; they are all reliable. Just be sure to wait until the weather warms up enough so they don't get nipped by frost. You may be able to find snapdragons that will be in bloom in June.

You may also want to purchase some larger plants, and use them in strategically-placed container gardens and hanging planters.

A good book to consult is "The Cut-Flower Garden" by Theodore James, Jr. (Macmillan, 1993)

Good luck, and congratulations on both your new home and your wedding!
