Luffas are in the cucurbit family like cucumbers and squash and grow on a vine, with the rule of thumb to plant them about 4 feet apart. They are usually allowed to scramble in the garden instead of being trellised because each vine produces multiple fruits and they can weigh up to five pounds apiece.
