Do pine needles make a good mulch for asparagus or any other vegetable for that matter?

Yes they do. They make an attractive mulch and don't tend to blow or float away. And they break down slowly over time. I have used them in my garden for years with great results.

You may need to apply them a little thicker than you would leaves for example, in order to block the sunlight enough to effectively prevent weed seed germination.
