| Asparagus crowns should be planted in a sunny site, in well-amended soil. Plant the crowns in the spring by digging 12" wide planting trenches, 6"-8" deep. Set the crowns with their roots draped over small mounds of soil, 1 1/2'-2' apart in the trenches. Top with 2" of soil. In two weeks, add another 2" of soil. Continue adding soil every two weeks until the soil is slightly mounded above surface level to allow for settling. Mulch the bed after planting to keep weeds from growing and competing with the asparagus. Don't harvest any spears during the first two years, but allow the plants to mature and become vigorous. You can begin harvesting after the plants have been growing for three years. |
