I am beginning a new strawberry patch. Should I put my first row on the border, or about 2 feet in? Do strawberries send off runners in all directions, or just one way?

Strawberry plants produce runners that can take off in any direction. You can help guide the runner once it appears by gently placing it whereever you'd like the new little plant to take root. Plant your strawberries about 12" away from the border to give the plants room to grow to mature size. If runners appear to be stretching out over the border of the bed you can redirect them, even anchoring them to the soil with a piece of bent wire or plastic stake.
