| I want to know the actual process of growth for an amaryllis plant and what it looks like. I was given one and it is growing a lot of stems and I don't know what to do next. |
| The amaryllis is a bulb and it grows in cycles. It sounds like yours is growing normally. A newly potted bulb will usually grow tall bare stems with flower buds at the tip. Leaves will grow either just before, at the same time or shortly after the flower stems. When the blooms fade, cut off the stalk as close to the bulb as you can, being carefull not to damage the leaves. Then treat it like any other potted plant, giving it water, fertilizer and plenty of sun. In the fall, set it to "rest" for eight to ten weeks by witholding water and setting it in a cool dark place. When the leaves wither, remove them. When the "rest" time is over, bring it into normal household temperatures and water it lightly. It should start to grow all over again. Enjoy your plant! |
