The Q&A Archives: Time Frames for Seed Starting

Question: If I want to grow my own transplants from seed, how long before they should be put into the garden do I need to seed them? Lisa LaBorde Gainesville, TX

Answer: It all depends on what you're growing. Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, marigolds all need to be sown 6-8 weeks before the last frost date in your area (which is around March 20th). Broccoli, cabbage, lettuce and cucumbers should be seeded 4 weeks before the last date. Check the seed packets and a local garden center for specific recommendations for your plants.
