I've got a spot in front of my house where I'd like to grow cantaloupes and watermelons. The site is in full sun from sunrise until about 12 or 1 pm, at which point it gradually moves into shade as the afternoon progresses. We get very hot summers here, and the afternoon sun is the most intense. Will I be able to successfully grow the melons in this spot?

Yes, although the melons would prefer full sun all day, they should produce fine for you in that location.
