The Q&A Archives: Planting Tulips in the Spring

Question: I would like to plant mass tulips this spring. If I do so, will they bloom by late spring or summer?. I live in Tennessee and other bulbs are already blooming. I have a trouble spot in my back yard and I would like to cover it up with flowers but I would like for them to bloom by the end of April or May. Will this be possible? Thank you. Kim Goller Powell, TN

Answer: Unfortunately, you need to plant your tulips in fall for a spring bloom. For this year you can plant other bulbs such as dahlias, gladiolus and tuberose, but they need to be dug and stored overwinter. You can also plant lots of annuals until fall, thenplant the tulips.
