What would you recommend for the best soil care of my ficus plant upon moving it indoors for the cold months? |
For most houseplants brought in for the winter, the main concern is watering rather than soil. When plant growth slows due to reduced light levels (as is usually the case) the plants need less water. This is a judgement call made by the gardener -- the soil mix, the ambient temperature, the plant size in relation to the container and so on all affect the frequency and actual amount applied. Fertilization should also be proportionately decreased (and in some cases stopped) as plant growth slows. In terms of soil specifics, in spring you might need to consider repotting to refresh the soil. You could root prune and return it to the same size pot or move it to a larger pot depending on your ultimate goals for the plant. |
