The Q&A Archives: Preserving Bletilla as Cut Flowers

Question: My wife, Bonnie, has some bletilla flowers that are doing well outside but when she tries to cut them and enjoy them inside they go bad right away. Is there something she can do to help preserve them and enjoy them in a vase inside the house? Terry Thiel Rockville, MD

Answer: I'm sorry to say but the bletilla flowers are fairly delicate and won't last as a cut flower for long. You can try cutting them just as they are opening, crushing the stem ends and placing them in water in a cool spot in the house. This may prolong the life for a little while longer. I guess it's better to enjoy them outside as much as you can!
