Carrots love a deep, well-drained soil with a light to medium (sand or loam) texture. Heavy clays or rocky soils are not the best choice.

The longer rooted types of carrots need a deeper soil type to form normal, attractive roots than do the short rooted types. Mix a few inches of compost into the soil and your carrots will thank you!
