We inherited a plant which we have been told is a "Black Prince" when we bought our home. The leaves are redish but turn black. It has a stem like a corn plant. It appears to have been cultivated by just sticking a cut stalk in the ground. What is the best environment for it? Watering? Light?

Your plant is probably Cryptanthus 'Black Prince'. These plants love a rich growing medium, with lots of organic matter. They want to be kept moist (not too soggy) and prefer bright, indirect light. Temperatures around 70 to 85 are ideal but many Cryptanthus will tolerate higher temperature with no problems.

Good luck with your new plant!
