If I plant different varieties of hot and sweet peppers in close proximity of each other will cross pollination have any effect on this year's crop?

You can plant as many types as you'd like with no effect on this year's crop. If you are a seed saver, though, prepare for some surprises the following year! Enjoy your peppers!
