The Q&A Archives: Groundcovers

Question: We live in Los Angeles, zone 10, and have a large camellia, over seven feet high. We'd like a recommendation for a groundcover to plant around its base.

Answer: Some of the groundcovers you might consider are: Ajuga (Carpet Bugle) Epimedium, Winter Creeper, Houttuynia, Phlox subulata, Liriope (Creeping Lily Turf), and Nepeta (Catmint). These are are well-behaved plants with shallow root systems, so they shouldn't compete with the roots of your established camellia. The plants listed above have variegated leaves, or leaf colors that will complement the glossy deep green leaves of your shrub.
