| What types of perennials should I plant that would flourish in my area? I have two separate planting areas -- one has very rich soil and gets an abundance of water. The other area is a hillside that I'm trying to "naturalize" which has a lot of clay and rocks. I'd of course like this to be low maintenance. |
| Unfortunately it is difficult to make suggestions without knowing if your sites are sunny or shady. For sun with nice rich moist soil you might consider plants such as monarda, Joe Pye Weed, milkweed and lobelia cardinalis along with Siberian iris and hemerocallis. If it is shady, you might try lobelia cardinalis, astilbe, hosta, and ferns. For your rough hillside, you might look to the spring bulbs, purple coneflowers, Black-eyed Susans, salvias, sedums and creeping phloxes if it is sunny; ferns, sweet autumn clematis and Virginia creeper if it is shady.
