English ivy does not mind sun, heat and humidity as long as it is kept well watered. (It is often used in shady containers because it will survive in the shade, also.) A smaller leafed form could look quite charming as the trailer in a box with the annual flowering vinca rosea. Another one to consider is the variegated foliage plant vinca major which is often sold as an annual trailing plant for sunny containers.
