I recently had to retire on disability and want to get into gardening. I would like to start by planting from seed but have no idea what I am doing. For example I went and bought one of those seed starting kits with 72 cells in them and several packets of seeds. Question? I opened one of the seed packets and the seeds are so tiny. Do I put one seed into each cell and if so how -- they are so tiny. Any tips or direction to helpful sources for information? |
You are beginning on a great new pastime! Seed starting is lots of fun and part of the fun is in the experimentation -- gardeners learn something new all the time, so don't feel intimidated. You might find some of the following general (and detailed) information useful: http://208.156.226.50/articled... http://208.156.226.50/articled... Tiny seeds are always a challenge. Ideally you would try for just a few per cell and then thin out the extras so there is only one plant per pot. Some gardeners will mix the seed with fine sand and sprinkle a tiny pinch per cell, others will use a toothpick to nudge a few seeds at a time off a creased piece of paper, some use a tiny seeder device made expressly for the purpose; some gardeners plant numerous seeds (of one variety) into a 4 inch pot for germination and then prick out or transplant the resulting seedlings one by one into the cells..... Enjoy your seeds! |
