The Q&A Archives: Growing Tomatoes Indoors

Question: I would like to know what kind of conditions and what materials are needed to grow a tomato indoors. Is there a specific kind of soil? Shannon S. Brookfield, CT

Answer: Although it is not difficult to grow tomatoes indoors the yields will be small and a long time in coming. For inside growing: -Use a light well draining soilless potting soil -Grow lights, preferably full spectrum flourescent, will be necessary. Kept on for 16+ hours daily and adjusted regularly to keep them within a few inches of the plants. -Regular watering and fertilizing -Use varities with the shortest growing season, like Patio (pg 90 1997 Burpee Gardens Catalog) Growing them indoors willtake longer, could double the maturation time. -Give them lots of TLC-pruning, pinching, etc.
