Last autumn, we put horse manure on our asparagus bed. Does it need more fertilizer this spring? If so, what kind would be best?

The best way to answer your question would be to run some basic soil tests and find out what you soil is (or isn't) lacking. Your UMass Extension can help you with the tests and interpreting the results. Having said that, one of the best ways to care for an ongoing established asparagus bed is to "ridge" it in the spring using compost and then keep it well mulched with an organic mulch all summer to avoid weeds. These annual applications of organic material not only feed the soil but also help to counter the plant's tendency to move its roots closer and closer to the surface of the soil.
