The Q&A Archives: Planting Tomatoes and Peppers

Question: Could you please e-mail me instruction on how to plant tomatoes and peppers. This is our first time trying a garden.

Answer: Both prefer a sunny, well-drained spot. If you can mix a few inches of compost into the soil prior to planting, that will be great.

Set pepper plants at about the same level they were growing in the container. Tomatoes can be set a bit deeper if you like. Give them all a good drench of liquid plant food after planting to settle them in and get off to a great start.

Keep feeding them with a liquid plant food every time you water for a week or two. Then back off and wait until the first fruits begin to set before resuming the fertilizer applications.
