The Q&A Archives: Asparagus In A Container

Question: Can I plant asparagus roots in pots, more for the fern than for the asparagus?

Answer: Yes, but you will need to plant them in a large container for best results. A half whiskey barrel would be ideal. Use a lot of compost in the planting mix and keep them well watered, especially in the summer heat.

You may also want to consider "Asparagus Fern" (Asparagus densiflorus cv. Sprengeri). Although it is not an edible plant, it would probably be a more dependable container ornamental for you.
