The Q&A Archives: Deterring Gophers

Question: What's the most effective way to get rid of gophers? Any luck with gopher snakes? What are the best soil amendments to add for a vegetable garden? flower garden? Thanks! MK Jackson El Cajon, CA

Answer: You could plant gopher spurge (Euphorbia lathyrus) a plant gophers hate to be around. Plant one every 3-4 feet. You can try noise emitters that supposidely create noises gophers can't stand. Also, castor beans are not a favored gopher food. Drop some beans in their holes or spray the product Mole Med (based on the castor bean plant) around their hole. Of course a good dog or hav-a-hart trap may also work to keep them away. I guess you'll have to experiment to find the best solution. The bestamendements for your garden are organic matter (manures), hay, straw, compost, leaves and grass clippings. Apply them in summer and fall working them into the garden. Apply finished compost or composted manures in spring a few weeks before planting.
