I have a small backyard, which is partially shady on one side. My question is what type of small trees can I plant on this side? I'd like the trees to have color to them, as the side yard is visible from our living room.

One of the more attractive trees that will grow in your region is Crape Myrtle. It's well-behaved, stays manageable, and doesn't need a lot of care or pruning. The spring bloom is spectacular! Acacia is another spring bloomer. A final consideration might be Albizia, the Silk Tree. It is gorgeous when in bloom and has almost feathery foliage. It does drop flowers, seed capsules and leaves, though, so unless you detest litter on the ground, it might be a good tree for your small backyard. Each of these trees grows best in full sunshine.
