How difficult is it to grow a "flat" of flowers much like one might buy at a garden mart? What is the
procedure, what do I need to know, and is it worth the effort?

The answer to your question is "It depends." If you enjoy seed starting and caring for the seedlings, or if you want to grow a specialized variety of a certain plant, if you want very large quantities of plants, or if your local retail sources are insufficient for whatever reason, then it is "worth" it. It is not terribly difficult but it does take some effort and patience and time. I think you will find the following two articles

Seedstarting Made Easy at http://www.gardeners.com/garde...

Seedling Savvy at http://207.201.7.73/nga/articl...

helpful and informative enough to get you started if you decide to give it a try.
