Saw some grapevines for sale at Lowes the other day. If we buy some, how to take care of them until planting time? When is the best time to plant them in the Elmira New York country side? MWOODY@PTD>NET

Dormant, bare root plants should be planted immediately while they are still dormant. This way they can break dormancy naturally as the weather changes. If they are dormant container plants, they can also be planted immediately as long as the ground isn't frozen. If, however, they have been trucked in from a warmer area or have been kept indoors and have broken dormancy, then it is difficult to hold them until the weather changes. In this case you would need to plant the bare-root plant in a container and then you would need to do the best you can to keep the container plant in a bright and sunny spot and then move the plant into a sheltered (above freezing) spot whenever there is inclement weather. (You would do the same for a plant already ina container.)
