Sweet peas are a light weight twining sort of vine that need something to scramble over such as a trellis or a bit of fence or even a neighboring shrub. If there is nothing to climb they will flop across the ground and will not grow as well as they would upright. They need to be planted very early in the spring while the soil is cool, and do best in a deep, rich, moist but well drained soil in full sun. They also prefer cool weather and will give up when the weather turns hot.
