The Q&A Archives: Encouraging Forsythia Bloom

Question: I live in zone 6 and my forsythias don't bloom. Do they need fertilizer or a change of soil? I've had them three years. Marlynn Crutchfield Old Fort, TN

Answer: The only thing I can think of for your forsythia not blooming is lack of light. They need at least 6 hours of direct light a day for best growth. Also, if you're pruing them too late in the season, you may be pruning off the flower buds that form in late summer and bloom in spring. Only prune forsythias right after they are finished blooming.
