The Q&A Archives: Insect Holes in Lilac Bushes

Question: My lilacs seem to have been invaded by some type of bug. There are numerous holes appearing along the entire length of each branch. The older growth sections are dying. Please advise.

Answer: Unfortunately it is impossible to make a definite diagnosis of the problem based on the information in your question. Lilacs are occasionally subject to injury from borers or scale, but the damage would not match what you have described. You might wish to take a sample to your County Extension for a positive identification and suggested controls, if any.
