We have white pines in a shady area which have lost most of their needles. We know now that they should be in a sunny location, so we will move them in the spring. Will pruning enable them to regrow their needles? Or are they a lost cause....

Unfortunately pines will not grow new needles from old wood. Instead, their new growth is at the branch tips. In my experience, too, they are quite difficult to move successfully if they are of any size at all so you might not want to try to transplant them to a prominent place.
