The Q&A Archives: Unusual Lettuce

Question: Last year I tasted some salad greens that tasted like horseradish. It looked like lettuce. I don't know what it was or how to find seeds for it, but it was wonderful! Can you help me located this elusive vegetable?

Answer: Salad greens are no longer just leaf or iceberg lettuces, but a combination of robust, full-flavored herbs. You've probably tasted more than one of the greens contained in a Mesclun mix. You can purchase a package of blended salad greens from Shepherd's Garden Seeds, 30 Irene St., Torrington, CT 06790-6658 Try 'Piquant Salad Greens Mix', 'California Mesclun Mix', or 'Misticanza Italian Salad Mix'.
