My wife and I are pround owners of our first house. We don't have the slighthest idea on how to take care of our lawn. We have about a quarter acrea of property, not too large, and need some advise on how to maintain the lawn. Can you tell us the basic steps in caring for our lawn?

Congratulations on your new home! Lawn care is an ongoing process, and the first step is to run some basic soil tests so you know exactly where your soil is lacking in terms of growing turf. The results will tell you how much (if any) lime or fertilizer you need to add. The next step is to assess the best types of grass to grow based on the growing conditions such as soil type and amount of light your lawn area receives. Finally, ongoing care means regular frequent mowing -- and the optimum mowing height depends on the type(s) of grass in your lawn. Since you are just starting out you might wish to look at a basic book about lawn care. One I particularly like because it is very straightforward and should answer all of your questions is "Lawn Care for Dummies" by Lance Walheim ISBN 0-7645-5077-2. Starting out right is so important -- it can possibly save you a lot of trouble and money in the long run!
