The Q&A Archives: Cats Digging

Question: How can I get rid of a cat that is digging in my garden?

Answer: Instead of getting rid of the cat, how about preventing him or her from digging in your garden? You can use slightly crumpled chicken wire over the soil surface prior to planting and then cut holes in the wire to accommodate your plants. Or, you can drive stakes around the bed and string nylon fishing line from stake to stake, criss-crossing it over the bed. Keep the line only six inches above the soil and make sure it crosses every 6-8 inches. Either of these temporary measures will deter cats from digging in the garden. Once they've learned they can't dig there, they will find a different place to go, and you can remove the barriers.
