The Q&A Archives: Maintaining Moisture in a Container Garden

Question: I have limited space for a garden and have made a large container of approximately 3' X 8'. The soil drys out quickly so I have lined the container with plastic. Is there more do before I plant this year? Joseph Maguire Mill Valley, CA

Answer: If you're worried about your container drying out often, add 1/2 wheelbarrow load of finished compost to the soil mix. The compost will help hold moisture and add fertility to the planter. Other than that, you sound like you're all set to plant and enjoy your container garden.
