| Shrubs and perennials will do best in a soil that has been well prepared ahead of time. Usually, this means running some basic soil tests to determine what, if any amendments (such as lime or fertilizer) need to be added. It also, especially for perennials, usually includes ading copious amounts of organic matter such as compost or well rotted manure to improve the soil structure. At planting many gardeners will routinely work some balanced fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) through the soil, but it is not strictly necessary and the only way to tell for sure is by testing the soil. |
