The Q&A Archives: Magnolia Tree

Question: Is the Magnolia Soulangeana Tree also refered to the Saucer Magnolia. I bought a Magnolia tree and I wanted a saucer Magnolia. The person in gardens said the Magnolia Soulangeana is the same. Please let me know if this is correct.

Answer: There are so many Magnolia hybrids that it's hard to keep them all straight! Magnolias are either evergreen or deciduous. The deciduous group has two flower types; saucer or star. Magnolia soulangiana is the saucer type. Magnolia kobus or Magnolia stellata are the star types. So, if you have Magnolia soulangiana, you have a saucer type Magnolia.
