The Q&A Archives: Planting Asparagus

Question: I received asparagus roots without any planting instructions. How deep do I plant them, and in what kind of location? Thanks. Susan McFarland Oxnard, CA

Answer: Plant your asparagus in full sun with well drained soil amended with compost. Dig a trench 1 foot deep and sprinkle some bone meal in the bottom. Spread the roots out "like a spider" on the soil about 1 to 2 feet apart and fill the trench with compost just so you cover the crown. Keep them well watered and as the shoots grow, continue to fill in the trench with compost until the trench is filled to the soil line. Don'r harvest the first two years, but begin harvesting lightly (about for 4 weeks) the third year.
