| We have a bank in our yard that's 100 feet long and about 6 feet tall. It's filled with weeds. How would you recommend we tackle it? If we clear it in sections and install plants, are we going to be fighting weeds constantly? Help. |
| It sounds as though you have a real project on your hands. First order of business is to remove the weeds, and their roots. You can do this by rototilling and raking, out the debris prior to planting. To keep weed seeds from germinating, or leftover roots from sprouting, cover the soil surface to eliminate light. There are woven weed barriers on the market, or you can use cardboard or several thicknesses of newspaper over the soil surface. Cover with a thick organic mulch, then cut holes through the material when you're ready to plant. Your choice of material will depend upon the plants you're going to put in. If you're installing groundcovers or creeping plants, they will still take root through the organic matter, but not through the woven weed barrier material. |
