I usually just stick to plants but this was my first time trying vegetables.I was experimenting with different kinds of vegetables just to see what would happen.I planted a store bought potato and an onion that had been sitting around . The onion started growing scallions and sprouts or roots at the bottom, so I put it in some potting soil and a pot, within days it was growing out of pot (top and bottom).I didn't know how to plant a potato,so I planted it in a regular plant pot with potting soil too, eyes down, and two days later it was growing out of the bottom of the pot and had 3-5 colorful flowers on the sprouts(or whatever their called).I transplanted it to bigger pot.I guess all I really want to know is,do you think anything will come of these two veggies and if so,how do I grow them in my garden. Thanks for bearing with me. |
What a fun experiment! I suppose it is possible your potato could make little potatoes in the pot eventually if you can manage to keep it growing vigorously for long enough -- usually these plants need full sun to grow well -- but it is possible to grow potatoes in containers, although very large ones. When the weather moderates you could try transplanting it in the garden and see what happens. Your onion will most likely go to seed, meaning it will bloom and form seeds as would any mature onion and so is probably not worth setting out. Enjoy! |
