| Melon vines require copious amounts of water to develop fruit, a situation that could lead to root rot of your grapes. How about planting an annual in the soil below your grapes? One that doesn't need so much water? Green beans, if you want to harvest something, or a shallow-rooted, mild-mannered ground cover such as Kenilworth Ivy. I know it seems wasteful not to plant below the grapes, but without competition from other plants your grape vines will become robust and productive. |
