| You've made a good choice! Corn is very susceptible to frosts, so wait until the weather (and soil) warms up before planting. Corn usually produces two ears per stalk and you can extend your harvest a bit by planting seeds every two weeks. Grow your corn in a sunny spot, in soil amended with plenty of organic matter. Simply spread 3"-4" of organic matter over the bed and dig it in to enrich the soil. For best pollination plant your corn in blocks rather than rows. Sow 2-3 seeds together in holes 7"-15" apart, then thin so the stalks are about 15" apart. Plan to supply about one inch of water per week to your plants and fertilize with a diluted liquid fish emulsion when the plants are 6" tall and again when they are about knee high. If you mulch around the plants you'll suppress weeds that might compete with the growing corn. Enjoy your harvest of sweet Ruby Queen! |
