| This year I am going to plant a row of hedges in my yard. Probably either Tallhedge or Privet. I am anxious for the hedge to grow quickly and want to get them in the ground as soon as it is feasible to maximize growth this year. How soon do you think I can plant them? |
| If you plant dormant bare-root shrubs, you can plant in early spring and allow them to awaken naturally. If you purchase container grown shrubs, you can plant them any time -- as soon as the ground is workable. The best way to encourage fast growth is to prepare the holes or trench very generously -- loosen the soil wide and deep so the roots have ample room to spread, then be sure to water them regularly and keep them mulched to reduce competition from lawn or weeds. Also, don't forget to trim them regularly to encourage bushy growth at the base! |
