There are some very tasty strawberry cultivars available. If you want strawberries to ripen all through the summer, chose 'September Sweet' or 'Tristar'. If you'd like to have one big crop for canning or freezing, try 'Earliglow'. Some people think the Alpine Strawberries are the sweetest. 'Ruegen Improved' is an Alpine that produces small, fragrant and tasty berries. All strawberries grow best in full sunshine, in rich, moist, fast-draining soils. Before planting your strawberries mix organic matter into your soil (compost, leaf mold or peat moss) to enrich it and help it retain moisture. After planting your strawberries, mulch the soil with additional organic matter to help suppress weeds.
