The Q&A Archives: Broken Top on European White Birch

Question: The last real heavy snow that we received here in the northeast has severed 5 feet off the top of my 20' European white birch tree? Is there any way we can save the top by replanting it?

Answer: How disheartening! Unfortunately, no, you can't do anything with the top piece. In fact, it sounds like the damage was rather severe to the original tree, so you might wish to call in a professional arborist to see if the tree will survive and if any remedial pruning can be done to ameliorate the damage.
