What do squash bugs look like and would they be in the house this time of the year (March)? We are in cold NY.

It is highly unlikely that you would see squash bugs right now, but it is very possible that you are seeing boxelder bugs (which look vaguely similar) in your house. This article from the University of Minnesota has a picture and a discussion of this seasonal household pest: http://www.mes.umn.edu/Documen... At least they are relatively harmless indoors and will go away of their own accord.
