When can I start onion sets in the spring?

Onion sets should be planted as early in the spring as possible, just as soon as the soil can be worked. Plant them stem end up about six inches apart and cover them with about 1/4 inch of compost or fine soil. Water them in well to firm the soil and expect them to grow quickly.
